chrisoula's top floor
from chrisoula's top floor
i see to the mountain's top
to the olive grove rows
across tiled rooftops
to the fields of sheep
across a misted sky
to orange dots crowding
backyard trees
blues and greens blend
into a wintery mix
feeding the worked soil
underfoot i feel the
shaken olive fruit
i hear a dog's call
as a filled truck-bed
bounces along the field road
back home

to grandmother
i hear a lot about grandmothers' hands
when i ask people to "tell me a food story..."
often we end up in conversation about
Grandmother
grandmother's hands
moving across tables
brushing cheeks
wiping away tears
offering comfort
yiayia to me
nana, grandma, abuela, nonna to others
offering something to children
that we cannot quite put a finger on
but they hold so clearly in their hands
