a bedroom facing west

i always choose the bedroom that faces west
not for its late afternoon light
though it does seduce me with sleepy warmth
but because the sheets,
the color of butter,
do not change with the year's style
the heavy dresser always stands
at the end of the bed
too big for the space
and i still find my papou's red night shirt
tucked into the bedside table
in this bedroom facing west

it is getting colder

crawdads dangle

the river is in black and white
he leaps from the bridge
in a crescendo of limbs
of twists
shrieks of anticipation
he comes up for air
his teeth flash in the too bright light
young blood runs thick
crawdads dangle by their tails
and his chest swells
his eyes travel back up
to where his toes last touched
he climbs again

unto that element

 “When down her weedy trophies and herself

Fell in the weeping brook. Her clothes spread wide;

And, mermaid-like, awhile they bore her up:

Which time she chanted snatches of old tunes;

As one incapable of her own distress,

Or like a creature native and indued

Unto that element: but long it could not be

Till that her garments, heavy with their drink,

Pull’d the poor wretch from her melodious lay

To muddy death.”

― William Shakespeare, Hamlet
